Richard Baxter, Manufacturing Engineer, for Johnson Controls in Waynesboro, PA had a problem. His manufacturing team of pipe fitters was wasting up to 30 minutes to hand bevel just one pipe end for weld preparation. Quality was also an issue so he decided to find a better way. After an Internet search and then a visit to Fab-Tech in Chicago, he found his answer - the C8H ChamferMate from MSI.
Johnson Controls is a large industrial company and the Waynesboro location manufactures industrial refrigeration packages and pressure vessels. These refrigeration packages are used in the food and beverage industry and include a wide variety of sub-systems that need to be connected with various types and diameter of metal pipe.
Mr Baxter says that 'they purchased a C8H ChamferMate from MSI late last year and are very satisfied with the machine. The speed and quality of the process and resulting bevel has been a huge time saver for us. Where it used to take us up to 30 minutes to bevel and deburr a pipe we can now bevel it in 90 seconds or less using this machine. The pipe is cut to a custom length to connect the systems and absorb all of the assembly tolerances. The C8H can go down to 1" diameter pipe so it handles just about all the pipe diameters we use.'
The pipes beveled are mild carbon steel ASME 106B and B53 steam pipe grade from 1" to 8" in diameter
Mr. Baxter goes on to say 'that the C8H ChamferMate is well designed, thought out, and easy to repair if necessary. It is so well built we have not had any issues.'
The ChamferMate® Model C8H is a heavy duty hydraulic powered pipe beveling machine with up to 8-3/4” OD capacity. With 20 HP, the C8H has the power to machine weld bevels and other forms on the end of heavy wall pipe and tubing within its range.
