Precision Flange & Machine located in Houston, TX is a manufacturing company focused on quality, precision machined and fabricated products made from carbon, stainless, and a variety of other alloys. One of the products they fabricate is a pipe lateral for the petro-chemical industry. A lateral is a pipe with a hole cut in it that allows another section of pipe to be welded on at a 45 degree angle creating a splitter.
Previously Precision Flange was sawing the pipe and then using a lathe to manually beveling the ends for weld preparation. This manual process took between two and three minutes per pipe depending on pipe diameter and length.
So when Tom Viar, Quality and Operations Manager, needed a faster more efficient solution he found MSI. Precision purchased a C8H ChamferMate automated pipe beveling system.
Tom says "We took delivery of this machine in February and have chamfered pipe from 2” – 8” diameter. For the pipe we cut it takes an average of 20 seconds per chamfer. This allows us to have our saw operators doing the chamfering in line with the sawing. Our operator can set a part on the saw and then set up the bevel while the next part is being sawed. In fact the process is so much more efficient we can have the same operator also add the roll stencil marking to the pipe. A pipe now comes out of this station ready to weld.
This machine is very well built and the change over from one size to another is quick and simple. The design is very well thought out and MSI uses only the best components. We did have one minor problem but your service and response was excellent and with a phone call we were back up within the hour.
